Temple Grandin a Success!

Dr. Temple Grandin, November 30, 2010 was hosted by SK9 Scottish Terrier Rescue and Buckeyes for Canines, Columbus, Ohio

Here are statements and answers to questions asked of Dr. Grandin during the seminar presentation on puppy mills.

"Dogs are social beings. You lock them up in cages and they don’t have anything to do, they go stir crazy. It makes them crazy."

Question: "What about commercial breeding? Is it agriculture?

"Is commercial breeding agriculture? I never really considered dogs agriculture."

Question: Could you in your opinion describe the proper housing for a breeding dog. In your opinion what would you expect or want?

"One of the things I want is that somebody goes in there every day and takes it out and plays with it and does things with it. That is probably more important than if the run is 20 feet long or if it is 15 feet long. Dogs need human companionship."

"People call me up and they ask about how can they fix up the local animal shelter better and design it better.

I say the single most important thing that you can do is have volunteers come out and take each dog out every day for an hour of quality time playing, running, playing ball, just doing stuff, getting out there interacting with the person.  And you’re gonna need to do it every day, otherwise the stress hormones are gonna go right back up. Dogs need a lot of human companionship. "

About Us

Stay Informed in 2011

Since we have started rescuing over 9 years ago as a group, there are now 104 happy Scottish Terriers in forever homes.  Rescues are individually worked with teaching social skills, family skills and pack skills while in our homes to prepare them for adoption into forever homes.

Our rescues are medically maintained at Swenson’s Veterinary Services for health issues, shot records and spaying and neutering prior to adoptions.

(SK9 Scottish Terrier Rescue is a 501c3 Non-Profit Organization)

Free To A Good Home

Typically women put on a loving performance for your dog or cat, promising them a wonderful home, or say they have a pet that needs a companion. They perform a theatrical sales job for your benefit.  Never offer your pet for free!  If for some reason you are unable to keep your pet, contact an ethical rescue group to take the pet, or, if you have a “no kill shelter,” ask for their help.  Always check out the rescue group by asking for five referrals and make the follow-up calls.  You are determining your pet’s life or death.  You should feel obligated to find your pet a good home.

Dogfighters

These ruthless people will primarily steal domesticated small dogs and cats.  The small dogs are used as bait for the fighting dogs in preparing for a fight.  Small dogs are no match for a fighting dog like the pit bull.  The owners of fighting dogs want it this way because they do not want their fighting pit bull to be injured.  Declawed cats are preferred.  Cats with claws will cause damage to their fighting dog during a training session.
